Toys for Big Boys: Points to consider when choosing a generator or snowblower

by Heather Ferguson

Part of making seasonal preparations for our Maritime winter may include purchasing a generator or a snowblower. If you’re in the market for either or both, think of Toys for Big Boys at 633 Salisbury Road. Larry Northrup, General Manager, has a few points to consider when choosing a generator. First of all, examine your energy needs. What components of household energy would you require a generator for? Household heat? Lighting, cooking? Do you have any backup heat source from wood or propane? Normal emergency household usage usually requires a generator of between 5000 to 6500 watts, with larger ones for commercial use such as at construction sites for power tools or for camping in winter or summer. Handy all year, they are great for RV’s, trailers, and camps. The safest form of emergency power, the Honda generator, in particular, is specially equipped with a circuit breaker for added safety and to prevent overload damage. Great for continuous usage, it is environmentally responsible, yet designed to be quiet with low emissions, and work best in tandem with an alternative power source.

Another “must have” for the winter is a snowblower. Available in various sizes, it is best to choose one to suit the size of the driveway, whether it be residential or commercial. Some customers require one to do several driveways. With various sizes and price points available, it is best to establish a budget. The Honda models sport new hydrostatic transmissions that are fluid driven for smooth handling. Maintenance free with 15- to 20-years longevity, the newest models feature a remote-controlled chute worked with a joystick which can throw snow 50 to 60 feet away from the driveway. With technology becoming more and more sophisticated, these new models are track driven and can even mount deck and garden stairs. The only ones of their kind on the market, they offer more ease of operation with less manhandling. At Toys for Big Boys, look for in-house financing of either of these items, a full-service and repair shop on site and a warehouse on the premises so you don’t have to wait for your order.

•        Determine your energy and snow removal needs.
•        Take advantage of the latest technology.
•        Choose an establishment which offers on-site servicing and in-house financing.
